I had a $1000 cooler yesterday in the space of a couple of hours, mainly at $3/6. 150BB is the very definition of severe. It was pretty painful stuff - one of those days when your monsters get coolered or just win the blinds, and your steals and marginal hands get threebet mercilessly. I tilted a bit by refusing to quit when I probably should have, even though I don't think I was making bad decisions.
Today was a completely different story, winning almost all of it back again mainly at 3/6. It makes such a difference to hit a few flops and the occasional runner-runner. Not to mention idiots who will call four bets cold with pocket deuces.
The swings are a little bit insane, and are a little bit hard to take. To give you some context, in real life I still have a crappy five year old $200 CRT telly because I'm too tight to spend $700 on a new one. So $1k in 2 hours is kindof a big deal. Though I must say $1000 down followed by $1000 up is much easier to deal with than the reverse.

Do the poker gods read my blog?
God know few others do.
I need to stop posting my wins. Seriously. I just took a massive reaming on some seriously fishy 5/10 Euro tables on Purple. $1200, or about 80BB in the space of about 90 minutes. Standard stuff, but just hand after hand - my AJ < AK on A high board. My AJ < AQ on A high board . My tptk crushed by turned 2 pair. My flopped set crushed by the paired turn(bigger boat) . Second pairs losing to top pairs. Huge draws (str8flush+overs) not getting there.
Just Ugh.

Two steps forward and three (or five) steps back
I should just shut my mouth. Seriously.
Last night was horrific. Over 100BB in the space of about two hours. Most of it was at 2/4EUR, where one particular megafish (who was seeing 100% of flops and about 60% of showdowns) was running all over me. He started out on my left, which was horrendous because he was also pretty aggressive. I managed to get him on my right, but by then much of the damage was done.
The $10k mark is suddenly quite a long way off, and it will probably get a bit further, as I am planning to play a qualifier at the casino tonight.
One small comfort is that I'll get a couple of hundred in rakeback at the end of the month, but I am still left with a bad taste.

The thing about milestones:
.. is that hitting them doesn't mean you stay in front of them.
In fact, my experience so far has been that hitting milestones is often followed by a massive cooler (as BCG will attest), or a heater that causes you to hit the *next* milestone before you know it.
In my case, it was the former. I had a crazy swinging session yesterday, where I ranged from being $200 up to being nearly $800 down (5/10 and 3/6 Euro will do that to you). Luckily I managed to finish ok and am now just $150 down from my $10k milestone, and with a chunky bit of rakeback to come.

Downswing officially over
My last peak prior to the big downswing was June 7th, and I am very happy to have eclipsed that mark. One month in the doldrums I can handle - it's when it stretches out to two and three that it drives you up the wall.
Bad news this month though in that RTR have dropped the RedStar rake race, which is very bad news. Choosing a Cake room seems to be a bit of a lottery, since you can only have one room with rakeback and the promotions change so much from month to month. I have a deposit bonus to finish, but once that's done I may need to find another room or two.

Argh.
This game gives me the shits sometimes.
I had a massive, massive cooler over the weekend. Lost about 12 buyins altogether over only a few hours of play. I probably wasn't playing my best, hit cooler after cooler, and possible ended up a little bit on tilt by the end of the session.
Example horrors were my flopped set and turned boat killed by quads, and AQ flopped ace, turned trips killed by a boat. I might collate a litany of the session and post it up a bit later.
The bottom line is that all my good work in no-limit play has been destroyed in a single session.
I think I'm going to play a live PLO rebuy on Tuesday to blow off some steam.
Side note: Full ring on iPoker is the most ridiculously nitty game I have ever seen. One table after 50 or so hands: (VPIP/PFR) 0/0 0/0 5/5 15/5 8/5 0/0 0/0 42/30 (hmm, that last one would be me raising ATC from MP on). Note that this was just one table for a short while, and not the reason I got stacked time after time.

... and then run like shite just for a change
I've gone busto on NoIQ... AGAIN!
A combination of river suckouts, staying too long at bad tables and *tilt*
Grrrr. I'm going to need a humungous hit in the races to compensate for this rubbish.
I've dropped $300 in three days, which hurts quite a lot.

Mornings still suck..
So I was going to post about how I've actually run pretty well the last couple of days and recovered a fair bit of bankroll.
Then I logged in for a quick half an hour of 1/2EUR and ran like a dog turd on valium. I don't think I won a single pot, and I somehow managed to dump 25BB in the space of about 40 hands. Every time I had a raising hand I was three bet and flopped the anti-nuts. Friggin marvellous.
On the upside, I ran pretty good for the previous couple of days. I have been playing mainly on Eurolinx where I cashed a $100 rake race prize and managed to double it pretty quickly, and on NoIQ which has just moved from iPoker to Entraction (where I am back to even par after starting with a good run). Both of these sites are running good rake races via RakeTheRake at the moment (see sidebar link). Eurolinx has a $10k race from 12th to 31st Jan, paying 40 places. From prior experience it should be very easy to pick up $100 in this race, and possibly up to $250 if I manage to get a bit of volume in. NoIQ has a massive $70,000 race running from 5th Jan to 28th Feb, paying a huge 120 places (minimum $200 prize). I have only played a couple of days on NoIQ and yet I am already sitting in a $400 position in the race. When added to 30% rakeback and a decent signup bonus, this looks potentially very very lucractive.
The one problem with NoIQ at the moment is that it isn't supported by Holdem Manager. It is supposed to be supported by PokerOffice, but I haven't had any luck with it so far. It is supported by PT2 but not by PT3.

Grrrr...
Sadly, it seems like every heater in the last two months in matched by a cooler twice as bad.
I just dumped 30BB on Eurolinx in ridiulously short order (playing the 2/4 Euro that I should have been steering clear of). Normal stuff - my KT trips beaten by KJ, my KJ in the BB 3 bet pre (vs 100% SB stealer), runs into a turned flush from 69hh to beat my top pair. W$SD=35%.
My bankroll is in really hideous shape now.

Perhaps this is part of my problem?
No sooner have I sworn to step down in stakes until I get my mojo back, I suddenly find myself sitting at a 3/6 Euro table. I logged into Eurolinx, which has now dumped all dollar tables in favour of Euro only (or rather Microgaming has). There being no 1/2 or 2/4 tables running, I had a look at the 3/6, and found several juicy looking fish. I couldn't resist, and sat down with my last $100.
The series of hands below illustrate rather well why it is a bad thing to play above where you are feeling comfortable. Over about 35 hands, I went up 30, down 50, until finally on that last hand, I was all-in before winning a nail biter to recover my original EUR80. Heart in mouth, I stood up immediately.
Not entirely happy with my play. A couple of those I think I should have folded before showdown (perhaps a bet-fold on the turn instead of check-call check-call).
Incidentally, I am astonished at Micro's decision to cut the dollar tables. It seems to have cut traffic already. Euro tables result in more rake, as the cap is EUR3 instead of $3. You also accumulate points and raked hands slower, because the rates of accumulation are currency independent. All in all, it stinks pretty bad. I quite like Eurolinx, but if the dollar tables don't come back, my days there are probably numbered.
A corker to cap it off on Stars:

Downer
I am in the middle of the biggest downswing of my short career. In November and December I have lost a pretty obscene amount for the stakes I play - probably going on for 300 big bets or so. It has completely destroyed my previously good position at 2/4 stakes.
I'm not sure what to make of it. I suspect I am getting a little bit lazy, a little bit undisciplined, but I have also taken some horrific beats recently. I think I will need to take stock a little, and hop back down to mainly 1/2 for a while until I get my mojo back. I'll allow exceptions for chasing very good value bonuses, but that's it.
Longer term, I have some rethinking to do. Maybe shorthanded limit just isn't the right game for me. Even the best players have pretty thin win rates and high variance. Perhaps I will bite the bullet and jump into NL full-time. I can buy a Stox subscription with my Eurolinx points, so I may also look at that and see if I can find some inspiration.
My most recent move was to take a Eurolinx reload, which is excellent value when added to the rakeback and RakeTheRake rake races. Unfortunately I blew the whole deposit in one sitting, leaving me to wonder whether I can complete the bonus at all.

Mornings suck..
I don't know why, but I always run bad in the mornings. I also seem to have this propensity recently of following a small heater with a bigger cooler.
I played a couple of 2/4 tables on Eurolinx this morning and got dumped for about 50BB in the space of about half an hour. It was a massacre: AA cracked by trips, top and third pair cracked by top two, top pair stuffed by turned two pair or turned trips. WTSD 46, W$SD 22. The one mitigating factor is that I will get $25 back for the aces cracked hand due to Eurolinx' "aces never lose" promotion.
This month is *not* going well.

A bit of fun
Just on a whim, I signed up for a little 20-seat sit 'n go last night (3.75 with rebuys and addons). It turned out that it was a super shorthanded tournament with four seat tables. This turned out to be very interesting, and really good practice for blind stealing a sizing bets correctly. The players were almost uniformly dismal (to be expected at that buyin), playing either weak tight or loose passive. I was able to steal blinds and bluff the flop at will, and was given excellent odds to chase straights and flushed by all the postflop minbetting. Anyway, I didn't have to rebuy at all (I intended to double my stack at the start but won the first hand and never dropped below starting chips after that) and just took the addon after 30min. Finished up in 2nd for about $38 or so.
I had a good session at the cash tables too, ending up $100 up or so. Unfortunately I then sat at two very fishy tables late in the evening and pissed away the entire evening's profit on a massive cooler over about half an hour (running at about 30%WTSD and 33%W$SD) *sigh*.

And so it continues
The session was going badly already, after I ran into aces with a hand THREE times. Also flopped two pair vs a set. Then this shit happened to cap it all off.
Yes folks, that's a one outer on the river.
p.s it was Euro

Run over by a truck
I've just had my worst session. Ever.
Found some fish at 2/4 and 3/6 on Eurolinx. One in particular was 90/45 I kid you not, and he was calling down to the river most hands. I had perfect position on him on two different tables, and he sucked out on me hand after hand.
I played long after the whale had left with tables that were loose on the whole. I don't think I played that well, identifying a number of mistakes at the time. On the other hand I don't think I played so badly either. I seemed to be getting into a lot of tough positions - my raises got no respect and I frequently faced three bets to my raises or raises to my bets. I called down thin and ran into monsters, or folded and felt like I was being run down. It's a horrible feeling and I suppose is the beginnings of tilt.
It was a massacre: $300 dumped in quick time. I guess in the context of downswings, that one isn't so bad (50-60BB) - but wow it still hurts.

So what do you think I did after that monumental blunder.. I walked away, right? Wrong. I thought I would exploit my "dumping lots of chips on the table" image, and bought in for a max $100. Fortunately I managed not to do myself any more damage and escaped a little later when a network outage cut off my connection :-)
All up it could have been worse, and I hope I have learned a valuable lesson about identifying tilt.

Swings
The swings in this game are doing my head in. On Tuesday, I played a couple of tables at Littlewoods (888). I started out on a massive heater to be up about 40BB on the 2/4 table. It turned into reverse shortly thereafter and I lost the lot, and recovered at the end to be slightly ahead.
Yesterday, much the same story. I started out cold as ice on Littlewoods, losing maybe 40BB on two tables in half an hour (the stats were abysmal 30%WTSD, 20W$SD, stuff like that). There were a couple of horrendous bad beats - pocket jacks, made a set, rivered by a straight and then KK overpair also rivered by a straight. Both of those were huge pots, maybe 25BB altogether. I recovered a little of the loss (but far from all), and switched to Eurolinx. Even there, I had a huge swing - up 30BB, lost the lot, ended up 15BB or thereabouts.
Across the two days I am up a bit, but it's frustrating when the high point was so much higher.
By the way, Eurolinx is a Microgaming room where I signed up for rakeback via RakeTheRake. There is a 14x raked hands bonus that I will probably finish (with the rakeback factored in it probably works out similar to the CaptainCook bonus I did a while ago). RTR also have some exclusive rake races, so I may shoot for a small prize in one of those at some point.
I have also recently completed the Ladbrokes kickback bonus on Boogster. It was pretty easy, though I suffered a fairly sizable loss while accumulating the bonus (that seems to happen to me a lot).

The cooler that was bound to come
Had a nasty cold session the other night on Pacific. Lost maybe 50BB at 2/4 and some more at 1/2. The tables felt pretty fishy, so I persisted, but unfortunately the turnaround never came. I won a total of seven pots in the last 100 hands ( playing 5-6 handed), and caught a ridiculous number of second best hands (2nd best straights etc).
What I am quite happy about is that I don't feel too destroyed by it (even though it's probably my worst single session loss). In the context of my month and my week, I'm still pretty happy overall.
In other news, I just finished my books on Paddy. Now for the two month wait for them to turn up so I can learn something to plug my leaks ;)

OnGame giving me the yip!
Ok I finally finished the Hollywood PSO bonus, but I ran so bad on Hollywood (and especially the last couple of hours) that I actually managed to come out only just barely even including the PSO kickback. I got murdered last night - lots of good starting hands, few flops hit (and those I did hit often ran into bigger hands).
Thank goodness for the kickback, because otherwise I would have taken quite some damage..
